Yesterday was “Opening Day” for Major League Baseball. As many of you know I’m an avid baseball fan. Now you might be wondering just what this has to do with diving. As every baseball fan knows opening day is the new beginning, even the weakest team starts the season fresh and there is always the possibility of a successful drive to perfection. Perfection of course is unobtainable but that doesn’t matter. What matters is that each season with a clean slate each and every player on each and every team attempts it. The loser is not disgraced, it is the one that never attempts the challenge. So why am I waxing philosophically on this beautiful spring day? It’s because of a quotation that was sent to me by a friend in the liveaboard dive industry. It’s one of my favorites.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Mark Twain
Mr. Twain was a very smart man. You only have one shot at this life, it would be a shame to waste it because you wanted to be cautious and never take a risk.
